Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill denied Thursday that Democrats are calling on Democratic National Committee Chairperson
Debbie Wasserman Schultz to step down, but said the Florida lawmaker still needs to focus on uniting the party.
"Debbie has to make a decision going forward," McCaskill told MSNBC's
"Morning Joe" program. "We have to focus on how we unite and defeat Donald Trump. And fair or unfair, she is to many of the Bernie [Sanders] supporters somebody that really gets them riled up."
But the decision will ultimately be up to Wasserman Schultz about whether to stay, said McCaskill, and she doesn't "think anybody is trying to move Debbie out. But I think we all need to figure out how to get along. We need to land this plane."
Sanders and his supporters are accusing Wasserman Schultz of tipping the scales in favor of Clinton. The Vermont independent senator has stated that he is not only backing law professor Tim Canova in the race for the chairman's House seat, but vowed that if he becomes president, Wasserman Schultz will no longer be the DNC chair.
