Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Thursday released a gun control plan and urged President Donald Trump to support it, The Hill reported.

"I am strongly urging the president to follow through on his comments [Wednesday] by endorsing these proposals and pushing Republican leaders in Congress to buck the NRA," Schumer said, referring to Trump comments such as Tuesday, when Trump said the National Rifle Association is "nothing to be afraid of."

The plan includes a ban on assault weapons. Schumer noted some Democrats might not be in favor of that provision.

"We believe there should be a debate on assault weapons on the floor of the Senate," Schumer told reporters, the Hill reported. "Not every member of our caucus will support the ban, but the vast majority will.

"If the president can get some Republicans to vote for the assault weapons ban . . . we can pass it soon," Schumer said.

"If the president steps up to the debate, he'll deserve credit, and we'll give it to him," Schumer added.

Democrats also aim to close loopholes in background checks for gun ownership.

"Not having background checks at gun shows is like checking IDs at the liquor store but not at the bar," Schumer said, the Hill reported.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said Thursday he was optimistic Trump would take the lead on the gun control issue.

"His leadership here is really critical if it's going to get through the House and Senate," Flake told "CBS This Morning."
