Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is optimistic that President Donald Trump will lead on the issue of gun control and will help shepherd new legislation designed at curbing the gun violence problem in America.

Flake said Thursday Trump's leadership on the matter will be "really critical," two weeks after a deadly high school shooting in Florida left 17 people dead.

"His leadership here is really critical if it's going to get through the House and Senate. We had a similar meeting on immigration that I was at. We heard a lot of good things that Tuesday, and by Thursday a lot of it had been walked back," Flake said during an appearance on "CBS This Morning."

"I do think there's a better chance this time the president will lead and really get out front on this. There are a couple of items that we can make progress on."

Trump held an open meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Wednesday that centered on gun control and what legislators can do. Flake did not attend, but he was pleased with what he saw.

"It was remarkable for him to say, 'hey, put this as part of the bill, why don't you have this part of the bill,'" Flake said.

Flake is not running for re-election this fall.

He has taken issue with several of Trump's policies over the last several months and criticized him in Senate floor speeches.

Flake admitted that the NRA has given him campaign money in the past, but not running for another term has afforded him the freedom to speak his mind regardless of how the NRA feels.

"I have to say in the past, I've supported a lot of measures that the NRA has not supported," Flake said.

"It goes without saying that you're freed of political considerations [when not running again], and that's one of the things that led me to make this decision. … I thought it was important that somebody stand up, and I'm very concerned about the direction of the administration on a number of issues, and I thought somebody needed to say that."

Flake will give a speech in New Hampshire later this month, which has sparked talk of a potential run for president in 2020.
