Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, Wednesday called Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin a liar who wants to "suck up" to President Donald Trump, Politico reported.
The Senate minority leader also claimed that Mnuchin "lost all credibility" on Wall Street, after the treasury secretary warned of a sharp fall in stock prices if Congress fails to pass a tax-reform bill.
"I don't know if the man's deliberately lying, but it seems to," Schumer said in a Politico Money podcast.
"His statements are outlandish, and he seems just to want to — I don't know if I'm allowed to use this word, I think I am — suck up to Trump."
Schumer's blunt words shocked the Treasury Department.
"We are surprised to hear the minority leader express these comments about the secretary," a spokesman told Politico.
"The secretary is committed to delivering a major middle-class tax cut, more competitive business taxes that create jobs and wage growth and a fairer tax system."
Mnuchin last week told Politico that the roaring stock market is counting on major tax reform.
"To the extent we get the tax deal done, the stock market will go up higher," he said. "But there's no question in my mind that, if we don't get it done, you're going to see a reversal of a significant amount of these gains."
