Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Democrats need a strong economic message — and not just stated opposition to President Donald Trump — if they are going to be successful in the November elections, CNBC is reporting.
Schumer made his remarks at an appearance the University of Louisville on Monday.
"You cannot just run against Donald Trump," Schumer said. "And it is the job of we Democrats to put together a strong, cohesive, economic group of proposals aimed at the middle class and those struggling to get there."
Schumer said his party must "focus like a laser" on economic issues, including cutting the costs of student loans and boosting the availability of child care.
Schumer was the guest of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who was on hand for the address, according to WDRB-TV in Louisville. And Schumer talked of the Senate moving ahead.
"We've shown that the Senate can lead before, and it must do so again," Schumer said.
"The House is fractured. The president — is the president. It's the Senate that has the potential to act as a beacon of stable leadership and progress in a political culture plagued by gridlock and division and rancor. We have a special obligation to this country."
