Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling on House Speaker Paul Ryan to remove Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., from his leadership role in a critical House committee over reports that he altered a controversial top secret memo that could be made public Friday.

Nunes chairs the House Intelligence Committee and reportedly made changes to a memo that details FISA abuses among officials at the Department of Justice and the FBI after the panel voted to release it. President Donald Trump may declassify the document as soon as Friday.

Because of the changes, Schumer joined House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in asking for Ryan to remove Nunes from his committee post.

"I write to express my deep concern that under your leadership House Republicans have not taken credible action to fully address Russia's interference in our democracy and prevent cyberattacks from Russia in the future," Schumer wrote to Ryan.

"Instead, it appears that many House Republicans have decided to sow conspiracy theories and attack the integrity and credibility of federal law enforcement as a means to protect President Trump and undermine the work of Special Counsel Mueller."

Robert Mueller is leading the Department of Justice's investigation of whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia. The probe is said to have kickstarted via evidence obtained through a top secret FISA warrant, which some Republicans allege was handed out after the FBI cited the scandalous, but unverified Trump dossier.

Nunes' memo reportedly talks about the dossier and how it may have been used to secure the FISA warrant. Wednesday night, Democrats began accusing Nunes of changing the memo after the House panel voted to release it, thereby nullifying the vote.

"In particular, Devin Nunes, Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), has now drafted and seeks to release a conspiracy-themed memo that selectively cherry-picks classified information intended to discredit the past work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and ultimately Special Counsel Mueller," Schumer wrote.

After Schumer listed several questions he would like answered, he closed by writing, "I urge [you] to answer the preceding questions; withdraw support for the release of the HPSCI's memo; remove Chairman Nunes from the HPSCI; and insist on supporting swift passage of legislation protecting Special Counsel Mueller's investigation from political interference."

Earlier Thursday, Pelosi sent her own letter to Ryan that asked him to remove Nunes from his committee post.
