Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer slammed President Donald Trump's budget proposal on Tuesday, calling it "comic-book villain bad" that would be "a nightmare for the average working American," the Washington Examiner reported.
Trump's budget proposal, which would severely cut social programs while increasing defense spending, has been harshly criticized by Democrats, and even Republicans have called it "dead on arrival" in Congress.
Speaking from the Senate floor, Schumer said that "The Trump budget takes a sledgehammer to the middle class and the working poor, lavishes tax breaks on the wealthy and imagines all of the deficit problems away with fantasy math. The Trump budget exists somewhere over the rainbow where the dreams of Mick Mulvaney, Paul Ryan and the Koch brothers really do come true. Of course, these dreams are a nightmare for the average working American."
Listing a series of deep cuts to public services that would cause harm to many ordinary Americans, Schumer accused Trump of seeking to cut such programs in exchange for "more handouts for the rich."
The Senate minority leader also called the budget unrealistic, saying that "to make all the math work, the Trump budget makes entirely unfounded assumptions about economic growth."
Trump's budget is based on 3 percent annual economic growth, even though the Congressional Budget Office projects a more modest 1.9 percent growth, according to the Examiner.
Predicting that it would be rejected by both Houses of Congress, Schumer said that "The Trump budget, hopefully, will not see the light of day."
