A fierce critic of President Donald Trump threw him some praise Friday when it comes to the debate on gun control.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., generally does not mince words when it comes to his feelings about Trump.

He attended a White House meeting earlier this week about how to solve the gun violence epidemic. On Friday, Murphy said on Twitter Trump might be able to shepherd into law some gun measures to help keep Americans safer.

During Wednesday's bipartisan meeting on guns, Trump accused some Republicans of being afraid of the NRA.

"I'm a big fan of the NRA. These are great people. Great patriots," Trump said. "They love our country, but that doesn't mean we have to agree on everything."

Trump met with NRA officials last Sunday and again Thursday night as stakeholders in the gun debate try to come up with solutions.
