Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., a member of the Judiciary Committee, is calling for a delay in confirmation hearings on Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court.
Coons’ comments came during a Friday interview on MSNBC’s "Morning Joe."
"I don’t think we should be moving ahead with the confirmation hearings until we’ve gotten access to all the information about Judge Kavanaugh," Coons said. "He played a critical role in the Bush administration for a number of years."
Coons met with Kavanaugh on Thursday and expressed concerns.
"One of the main things I focused on with Judge Kavanaugh yesterday was the very sharp concerns raised by Paul Manafort’s conviction on eight felony counts and Michael Cohen’s pleading to eight felony counts and the question that raised about Judge Kavanaugh’s record, his printed records (and) his spoken record on presidential accountability," he said.
Coons also noted that "Kavanaugh has one of the strongest records of any circuit court judge in publicly saying that he questions whether or not we can hold the president accountable through things like a special counsel investigation."
Following his meeting with Kavanaugh, Coons said the judge "tried to be very reassuring" about his views on whether presidents must comply with investigations and appeared to walk back past statements on the issue.
