Gov. Chris Christie is calling for the Interior Department to grant New Jersey an exemption on offshore drilling rights — just like the one given to the state of Florida, The Hill is reporting.
The move comes after Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's recent announcement that most of the country's outer continental shelf is being looked at for drilling. However, Zinke has granted Florida an exemption through 2024, according to the website.
"For eight years, the governor has been steadfastly opposed to drilling off the New Jersey coast," Christie's press secretary Brian Murphy said. "He remains so today. If exceptions are being made for other states, the governor will certainly pursue the same type of exception for New Jersey.
"He also will consult with the Attorney General on additional steps to continue his policy of protecting New Jersey's coastline."
Christie, a Republican, will see his term in office end next week, The Hill noted.
Governors from other states have chimed in, as well — including Democratic New York Andrew Cuomo.
And California Gov. Jerry Brown, who also is strongly opposed to the drilling, has vowed to block "this reckless, short-sighted action."
