The choices in this year's presidential election are "stomach-turning" and Americans are likely to detest whoever wins the White House, the
Chicago Tribune says in a blistering editorial published Tuesday.
"More than any campaign in memory, this one offers alternatives that most Americans find unpalatable, if not stomach-turning," the Tribune's editorial board says. "So the odds are very good that the next president will be someone most voters actively dislike or even detest."
The newspaper adds that while an independent or third-party candidate looms as a possibility, "the stark reality is that barring a political earthquake," they have little chance of making an impact.
"Ask Ross Perot, who at one point in the 1992 campaign led George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton by double-digit margins," The Tribune says.
"No candidate but Trump and Hillary has much, if any, chance of gaining the White House this year. Still, if you don't like what the major parties offer, you can reject it. Casting what some disparage as a ‘protest' vote may not change the outcome. But it's no loss for democracy."
