Rep. Dent: 'Not Prone to Conspiracy Theories' About FBI, DOJ

(CNN's "New Day")

Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., cast doubt on allegations from some of his fellow Republicans about corruption in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I am not prone to conspiracy theories. I really am not. I wish some of my colleagues would temper their rhetoric. We Republicans have often sold ourselves as the party of law enforcement, not just the state and local level, but the federal level as well," Dent said Wednesday on CNN's "New Day."

CNN's Alisyn Camerota referred to Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., saying on Fox News Wednesday that an "informant" has information about a "secret society" in the FBI that opposes President Donald Trump.

"Do you know what Sen. Johnson is talking about?" Camerota asked.

"I have no idea," Dent said.

"I guess anything's possible, but I can't imagine there's some sort of grand conspiracy here. Call me skeptical," Dent added.

The congressman praised the work of the FBI. "I do believe that the men and women of the FBI are good, honorable, professional people. I'm sure there are some bad apples, but we have a process to deal with that. I think it's important that we not undermine the American public's confidence in the Justice Department and the FBI."

"We have to remember that these people at the FBI are very much involved with counterterrorism operations, very sensitive criminal investigations, and they are going out there putting their lives at risk every day," Dent said.

"We shouldn't lose sight of that over the politics of this particular Russia investigation," he added.
