Ben Carson claimed to pay newsman Walter Cronkite a compliment on a CNN program Monday morning, but it wasn't the oft-used "most trusted man in America."

Carson, former Republican presidential candidate, said he could really trust guys like Cronkite "even though Walter Cronkite was a left-wing radical, you would never know that," Mediaite reported.

After host Chris Cuomo pushed back, Carson said, "What I said was actually complimentary!" in that Cronkite was able to hide his political bias to appeal to all Americans.

"But he wasn't a radical, left-wing person," Cuomo said. "The compliment should be offered plainly, which was: he did the job the right way."
