Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina is lagging behind her competitors in fundraising.
In the first quarter of Fiorina's campaign, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO raised $1.4 million and her super PAC raised $3.4 million,
Politico reported.
However, those numbers pale in comparison to what other candidates have raised. For example, former pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who also announced his candidacy on May 4, like Fiorina, has raised a total of $10.5 million.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has raised a total of $14 million since he launched his campaign in March. Combined with what Cruz's super PAC has raised, the Texas Republican has a total of $51 million.
Frank Sadler, Fiorina's campaign manager, said in a memo to supporters that "until she announced her candidacy, Carly was leading two highly effective charitable organizations. She was not building the political infrastructure that other presidential candidates spend years (or generations) to cultivate. Said another way, her campaign launched from a standing start."
However, Politico notes that most of Fiorina's campaign falls under her super PAC, which has raised almost twice as much as her official campaign.
"We are well on our way to meeting the budget we laid out at the beginning and are thankful to have the support of so many people from across the country," Steve DeMaura, executive director of the super PAC, CARLY for America, told Politico.
Sadler added that "we won't raise as much as others at this early stage of our campaign, but we will raise what we need to go the distance."
