Rep. Tony Cardenas, D-Calif., is seeking to become the new chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee after the party failed to increase their numbers in the U.S. House of Representatives as expected, and instead lost seats, Axios reports.

Cardenas currently chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' BOLD PAC, which backs Hispanic Democratic candidates.

Cardenas' move comes as the party looks to boost support among Latino voters. President Donald Trump was able to increase his Latino support from 28% in 2016 to 32% in 2020 and boosted his support among Latino voters in Texas, south Florida and parts of California, Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Nevada.

Cardenas noted in a letter to colleagues "Black and Brown communities showing up at the polls in states like Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania," but added, "the night was not without some immense disappointments and I feel an unshakeable sense of loss and frustration for all our colleagues that will not be returning in the new Congress."

Other Democrats expected to seek the post, according to Axios, included Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney of New York.
