The state of California, still waging war against global warming, is set to defy President-elect Donald Trump, who has openly attacked policies intended to combat it, The New York Times reported.

Trump, who has indicated he will pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement, has mocked the notion of global warming, according to the newspaper. His Cabinet is filled with nominees who dispute global warming.

But California, where Hillary Clinton beat Trump by more than four million votes, has decided to fight global warming on its own if it has to.

State officials, including Gov. Jerry Brown, D-Calif., are saying they will work directly with other nations to beef-up already strong policies to fight climate change, including a mandated target of reducing carbon emission in the state to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, the newspaper reported.

But officials note the Trump administration could fight back and cut funding to the state's massive research community, which have has delivered a great deal of information on climate science. And others warn tighter regulations could spell other problems for the state.

"If the other states pursue no-climate-change policies, and we continue to go it on our own with our climate-change policies, then we would be at a competitive disadvantage for either relocating companies or growing companies here, particularly manufacturing factories," the newspaper quoted Rob Lapsley, the president of the California Business Roundtable.

But state officials vow they will not be swayed in their efforts.

"California more than ever is strongly committed to moving forward on our climate leadership," said Kevin de Leon, the leader of the State Senate. "We will not deviate from our leadership because of one election.

"If the president-elect and his administration work to undermine our climate leadership, they will hurt our economy. They will kill jobs. And ultimately, they will hurt the economy of the United States. We are 13 percent of the overall G.D.P."

And Time reported Gov. Brown is vowing the state will not shy away from a fight with Trump.

"We've got the scientists, we've got the lawyers, and we're ready to fight," he said.
