Former national security adviser John Bolton praised the airstrike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's elite Quds Force.

Bolton made his remarks in a Friday morning tweet.

He wrote: "Congratulations to all involved in eliminating Qassem Soleimani. Long in the making, this was a decisive blow against Iran's malign Quds Force activities worldwide. Hope this is the first step to regime change in Tehran."

The U.S. airstrike near Baghdad's airport also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias in Iraq, and five other people.

The Pentagon said Soleimani was killed because he "was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region."
