Bill Clinton on Tuesday said Donald Trump's call to ban Muslims from entering the United States is a "dumb, dumb, dumb idea."
During his speech at a gala for Emily's List, a liberal advocacy group which has endorsed Hillary Clinton, the former president did not mention Trump by name, but did point out two of the real estate mogul's most controversial proposals, according to
Politico.
Clinton also addressed Trump's plan to build a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, saying he doesn't think "you could get Mexico to pay for it, but you could put it up."
Building a wall would not be a successful gambit, Clinton added, reports Politico, because the Internet allows for radical groups to communicate with potential followers and "you can't keep social media out."
The former president's speeches have been in the spotlight since he stirred controversy with his reaction to a Black Lives Matter protester who accused him and Mrs. Clinton of supporting policies that devastated black communities, reports
The New York Times.
Clinton said he regretted the exchange, saying, "I know those people were just trying to get good television, but that doesn't mean I was most effective in answering it," reports The Times.
