Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy on Wednesday said he was "chuckling" at the "Trumpian statement" made by the president decrying the Russia sanctions bills that passed overwhelmingly in Congress.

In signing the bill, Trump called the bill "seriously flawed" and said he was elected because of the billion-dollar company he built.

"As president, I can make far better deals with foreign countries than Congress," Trump said in a statement.

"I'm kind of chuckling. That's such a Trumpian statement," Cassidy told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday.

"The fact is that the legislative branch has a role in this, we're exerting that role, if the president comes up with a better deal, I'm sure Congress will be open to that," the Louisiana Republican said.

"However, we felt there had to be a response to some of the actions that Russia has taken recently. And I'm glad we passed the agreement."

Trump's 400-plus word statement bashed Congress for forcing his hand to sign it; there were only five combined "nay" votes on the measure.

"So there's always been tension between the executive and the legislative when it comes to foreign affairs. On the other hand, we as the legislative body wanted to clearly say that Russia's recent actions are beyond the pale and that they deserve some response," Cassidy said.

"If the president decides to have something that is a half measure, then obviously Congress has its own tools, but I'd rather think that the president and Congress will work together with each other as opposed to against each other," Cassidy said.
