Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by 12 percentage points in the latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released Tuesday to The Hill.
Trump’s numbers slid due to voters’ disapproval of how Trump has handled the coronavirus pandemic and racial tensions in the nation following the death of George Floyd, a Black man, at the hands of a white police officer.
Fifty-six percent of likely voters said Biden would be their choice if the election were held today, compared to just 44 percent for Trump. Forty-three percent said they approved of the job Trump is doing, compared to 57 percent who disapprove.
“After 11 months of improving ratings, Trump in the last month set back to below 50 percent in his handling of the crisis after the Clorox press conference as he pulled back from the daily briefings,” said Mark Penn, polling director for the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey.
“He continues to lag in the national presidential horse race while Biden’s numbers have shown no change up or down," he added, while also noting that "this race is far from over and both candidates have potentially winning scenarios.”
