More viewers tuned in to see former Vice President Joe Biden accept the Democratic presidential nomination than people who watched President Donald Trump accept his renomination, CNN Business reports.
According to overnight Nielsen ratings, Biden’s DNC speech drew 23.6 million viewers while Trump’s RNC address only attracted 21.6 million viewers. The data looked at who tuned in to nine cable and broadcast networks.
When all four days are tallied up, the DNC was higher rated than the RNC, according to Nielsen.
Biden's campaign celebrated ratings victory on Friday.
TJ Ducklo, national press secretary for the Biden campaign, tweeted to Biden rapid response director Andrew Bates and asked, "I always forget, does @realDonaldTrump care about his television ratings? Or is that not something he cares about? Like, do you think it'll trigger him that @JoeBiden's speech got way bigger ratings than his did?"
Bates replied: "You mean the self-described 'Ratings Machine DJT,' who bet the farm on this & broke the law to exploit the White House as a prop *while* pretending he isn't in charge as the pandemic spins out of control and violence & division flare up? Nah, I think he'll be totally sanguine."
Trump tweeted about the RNC’s ratings on Friday morning.
"Great Ratings & Reviews Last Night. Thank you!" he wrote.
He hasn’t tweeted about Biden edging him out on views.
Nielsen's data sets count traditional TV viewership across America but doesn’t account for streaming and other digital forms of engagement, according to CNN Business.
It is also impossible to determine if people watched both speeches or just one.
Overall, viewership of the 2020 conventions dropped from 2016.
Hillary Clinton’s speech in 2016 averaged 29.8 million viewers and Trump's speech averaged 32.2 million viewers, according to data.
