NATO allies don't need to take Donald Trump seriously, Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday.
On the same day Biden met with Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis, he spoke to reporters and issued the stern warning to America's strongest European allies.
"Our sacred honor is at stake. The fact that you occasionally hear something from a presidential candidate in the other party — it's nothing [that] should be taken seriously, because I don't think he understands what Article 5 is," Biden said, reports The Hill.
Biden then took another shot at Trump, who has said the U.S. should spend less on NATO and that countries in the trade organization need to pay more money if they want protection from America.
"There is continued, overwhelming, bipartisan agreement in the United States of America, both political parties, to maintain our commitment to NATO," Biden said.
"I want to make it clear, absolutely clear to all the people of the Baltic states, we have pledged our sacred honor, the United States of America, our sacred honor to the NATO Treaty and Article 5. We mean what we say, we have never reneged on any commitment we have made."
Article 5 of the NATO treaty stipulates that an attack against one NATO member country is an attack against all of the members.
Trump received plenty of backlash from his comments on NATO, including from members of the Republican Party.
