Joe Biden, who has been announced as the winner of the 2020 presidential election by several news outlets, plans to personally request that governors institute mask mandates in their states as a step to combat the coronavirus pandemic, NBC News reported on Sunday.
Newsmax has yet to call the race.
If governors do not abide by Biden’s appeal, then he will pressure mayors of cities in those states to enact such mandates at the local level, which is legally permitted in many states, according to a Biden campaign official.
There are currently more than 20 states that require masks to be worn in private businesses and public places according to NPR.
Such mandates have the backing of White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci, but were not encouraged by President Donald Trump.
