Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., stressed his opposition to enforcing federal marijuana laws and insisted states should be allowed to move toward decriminalize pot, The Hill is reporting.
"Marijuana is not the same as heroin," he said. "No one who has seriously studied the issue believes that marijuana should be classified as a Schedule 1 drug beside killer drugs like heroin.
"Quite the contrary. We should allow states the right to move toward the decriminalization of marijuana, not reverse the progress that has been made in recent years,"
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has decided to rescind a policy that discouraged enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states that have legalized pot, The Associated Press reported.
According to the AP, the move will let federal prosecutors decide how aggressively to enforce marijuana laws in those states where pot is legal.
Six states have approved the recreational use of marijuana and dozens more permit its use for medical purposes, according to The Hill.
