Bernie Sanders' campaign manager isn't buying actor George Clooney's claim that the majority of the money raised at two fundraisers over the weekend is going to candidates for office other than Hillary Clinton.
"This fundraising arrangement that George Clooney and others have donated into believing that they're giving money to the down-ballot candidates, two-thirds of that money is going actually to Hillary Clinton," Jeff Weaver told MSNBC Monday.
"Only a third has been going to down-ballot candidates. In addition to that, $15 million of that money has gone into other operations that primarily benefit only [former] Secretary [of State] Clinton.
Clooney played host to two Democrat fundraisers in California on Friday and Saturday. Clinton was in attendance, and a seat at the head table Friday night cost a reported $353,400 per couple.
Clooney told
NBC's Chuck Todd that is "an obscene amount of money."
"The Sanders campaign when they talk about it is absolutely right," Clooney said. on "Meet the Press." "It's ridiculous that we should have this kind of money in politics. I would agree completely."
Clooney, however, added that most of the money raised over the weekend will go to Democrats running for the House and Senate.
Weaver doesn't believe him.
"It seems as it's not working as it's supposed to, which is to benefit the [Democratic] Party and down-ballot. Almost all of the money is going to Hillary Clinton," Weaver said.
Sanders
released his first campaign ad in California over the weekend, with the theme being $27 — the average donation supporters have made to his campaign.
