Republicans are trying to bring back the Jim Crow days of laws holding back black people, Sen. Bernie Sanders said in a speech Thursday to the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network.
"We have a level of Republican voter suppression that is absolutely outrageous," Sanders told the crowd, during the speech that was aired on CNN. "You would have thought that after all we have gone through as a country to make sure that people have the right to vote, regardless of the color of their skin, that these Republican governors would show some mercy and not try to bring us back to Jim Crow days."
Republicans say voter ID laws are meant to prevent voter fraud, but Democrats argue it is poor people, especially minorities, who are less likely to have driver's licenses or other form of identification required by the laws.
"The idea that they are passing laws, restricting the right to vote, making it harder for people to vote, poor people, old people, people of color, that is moving in exactly the wrong way," Sanders said.
