Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., chose an unusual way to connect with his constituents: taking a stint as an Uber driver.
Sasse gave a ride to University of Nebraska-Lincoln sophomore Adrian Silva, who contacted the senator on Twitter to confirm it was him. Sasse then revealed that he has began moonlighting as an Uber driver to better know Nebraskans, though he donates his earnings to charity.
"At first, I was like, 'What?' Like the moment when you get trolled," Silva told BuzzFeed News. "I thought it was a joke, but then I saw he had a five-star rating. And it became apparent when I saw the rating that it was probably real.
"He's a pretty cool guy," Silva added. "I couldn't see who else would take time out of their day and shake my hand.
"I asked if we could talk about the election, and he said, 'Sure, you can lay it on me.' Since Ben Sasse was one of the few Republican senators who didn't endorse Donald, I asked him if he held that position still. He made it clear that they would obviously have to work together.
"When you have an actual senator there, you realize this is his actual job to work with the president, so you gain an appreciation for how they have to handle things," Silva said.
A spokesman for Sasse told The Guardian that "Senator Sasse does tons of Nebraska work events, from changing tires on semi trucks to feeding cattle at 5am. This work tour was built around the changing and dis-intermediated economy, a subject he talks about frequently."
Sasse, a conservative backed by the Tea Party, is currently serving his first term in Congress. He drew attention during the past election for his vocal opposition to president-elect Donald Trump, even voting for his running mate Mike Pence instead.
