Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., slammed President Donald Trump's proposals for steel and aluminum tariffs on Thursday.
"If the president goes through with this, it will kill American jobs, there will be retaliation and specific American families and producers and workers are going to lose," Sasse said on "CBS This Morning."
"Tariffs always hurt us.
"There's a big fight happening inside the administration right now because most senior people in the White House know this is a really dumb policy and the American people, the forgotten workers of even the Rust Belt states, they don't want to be drafted and be casualties in a stupid trade war," Sasse said.
Trump has proposed placing a 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum. He is expected to sign a presidential proclamation about the tariffs on Thursday.
The senator has been critical of Trump's tariff plans before. "Trade wars are never won. Trade wars are lost by both sides," Sasse said in a March 2 statement.
