Minnesota is joining other states in suing the Federal Communications Commission to protect net neutrality, Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson told the state's public radio site Tuesday.

The FCC two weeks ago voted 3-2 to repeal the Obama-era network neutrality rules that prevented internet providers from blocking or throttling access to websites or charging websites to access users at faster speeds.

AG's from Washington, Illinois, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Oregon, Virginia, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Maryland, Maine, Iowa, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Vermont, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia sent the FCC a letter a day before the vote asking it to delay it until "further investigation can determine exactly which comments should be considered."

They were referring to fake comments submitted during the net neutrality public comment process. New York Attorney General Eric. T. Schneiderman, whose office led the charge on investigating the comments, promised to sue to stop the "illegal rollback of net neutrality."

"The FCC's vote to rip apart net neutrality is a blow to New York consumers, and to everyone who cares about a free and open Internet," he said in a statement. "The FCC just gave Big Telecom an early Christmas present, by giving Internet service providers yet another way to put corporate profits over consumers. Today's rollback will give ISPs new ways to control what we see, what we do, and what we say online. That's a threat to the free exchange of ideas that has made the Internet a valuable asset in our democratic process."

Ben Wogsland, a spokesman for Swanson, said the lawsuit cannot be filed until the rule change is published in the Federal Register.
