Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Thursday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions made a "classic mistake" by not disclosing to senators that he met twice last year with the Russian ambassador — and if he did, "it may have been no news."
But since Sessions didn't, "now it is," the press secretary to former President George W. Bush said on Twitter:
The Justice Department said Wednesday that Sessions, the former four-term Alabama senator, met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak twice last year when he was a member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.
Sessions did not disclose those meetings in his confirmation hearing in January before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The attorney general said Thursday that he would not recuse himself of any Trump administration investigations on possible dealings with Russia.
"I have said that, when it's appropriate, I will recuse myself" from the investigation, Sessions told MSNBC.
President Donald Trump told reporters in Virginia that he had "total" confidence in Sessions and said that "I don't think so at all" when they asked him about recusal.
Trump was questioned in Newport News, where he was speaking at the commissioning of the Navy's new U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier.
