Sen. Angus King would like to see President Donald Trump conduct some "bridge building" during his speech in front of Congress on Tuesday night.
During an appearance on CNN's "New Day," the Maine independent spoke about Trump's upcoming address and what he hopes the president will do.
"It's time to start enunciating a positive vision. There's a lot of anxiety, there's a lot of anger, there's a lot of people really concerned about the direction of the administration," King said. "And I'd like to see a little bridge building tonight."
King generally caucuses with Democrats in the Senate chamber.
King added that the nation is divided to the point that there are almost two countries within one.
"This is an opportunity to reset in a positive and more inclusive direction, because we just can't keep running as really two separate countries here," he said.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday Trump's speech will be a "renewal of the American spirit."
"You can expect to see a speech grounded firmly in solving real problems for every American," Spicer said. "How can we make sure every American who needs a better job gets one. How we get children trapped in bad schools into better ones."
