Tallahassee Mayor Gillum: Trump 'Absolutely' Should Be Impeached
CNN's "New Day"

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who won the Democratic nomination in Florida's governor race Tuesday, said he "absolutely" thinks President Donald Trump should be impeached, but he does not think candidates from his party should use impeachment as a campaign platform.

"He has interfered with the Department of Justice, he has obstructed justice, and ever since that time, he has only driven deeper down a hole," Gillum told CNN's "New Day."

However, he said he thinks Democrats in his state should run based on what they will do for the people of the state.

Gillum also told the program he is not afraid of Trump's heavy involvement in the upcoming November election, in which the president backs Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., for the governor's seat.

"Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are both scraping from the bottom of the barrel," Gillum said. "I actually believe that Florida and its rich diversity are going to be looking for a governor that's going to bring us together, not divide us, not misogynist, not racists, not bigots."

Gillum was backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, leading political watchers to say the race between him and DeSantis to be a contest between Sanders, a 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, and Trump.

Gillum's nomination comes as Tallahassee's city government is being investigated under an FBI corruption probe, and he said Wednesday if anyone in city hall did something illegal, he hopes they will be held accountable.
