Senate Democrats are "losing ground every day” by opposing President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" on Tuesday.
Gingrich said Democrats are "trapped" because Barrett is an accomplished woman who has achieved "almost a miracle" by raising seven children while working as an appeals court judge.
He added that Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, summarized perfectly the situation by saying that Democrats "don't have anything that's useful that they can say."
The former House speaker said that although Democrats have slammed Trump and expressed concern about Obamacare and abortion during the hearings, they have not attacked Barrett, saying that "If you look at what they did to other conservative nominees, it is astonishing how little they went after her."
Gingrich said that previous Supreme Court confirmation battles have taught Democrats the lesson that "if you're nasty, you hurt yourself," pointing out that "it's doubly true if you're really nasty to a woman."
Gingrich said Democrats will, in their questions to Barrett, try to appear "dignified" by questioning her on an intellectual level, but even then, he argued, none of them “want to get in a head-on fight with her,” adding that "she is probably smarter than you. You look at her track record … None of us graduated first. I think if she has to, she'll more than hold her own."
He stressed that if Democrats "could get away with it, they'd never mention her name. She'd just be sort of the Trump nominee. But, of course, they do mention her name and that's why, I suspect, they're losing ground every day."
