Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee are "uncertain right now" about the direction in which they want to take the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, Sen. John Kennedy said Tuesday.

"You know that feeling you get when you wake up in the morning and you've got to go to the bathroom, but you just don't want to get out of bed?" the Louisiana Republican said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "That's kind of where the Democrats are. They're very uncertain right now."

On one hand, Democrats don't want to turn the hearing "into another freak show," Kennedy said, reiterating comments he made Monday about the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. "They don't want to make it circus freak crazy because that repulsed the American people last time."

However, another part of their base is to the "left of Lenin," the "Bernie (Sanders) bros, the I deserve, you owe me, burn it all crank wing," said Kennedy. "They want blood."

Barrett, though, is a good candidate who will be hard to attack.

"The centerpiece of their attack is going to be affordable care," said Kennedy. "Have you ever seen one of those, those high-powered manure guns that shoots the manure out onto the crops on the farmland? That's what it's been like so far. I don't think they laid a glove on her."

He also claimed that his colleagues think Americans "are morons," but the public is seeing a "very accomplished jurist" in Barrett.

Kennedy said he'll be asking the nominee about her judicial policy and about the changing role of the federal judiciary and the American system of government.

He also dismissed claims that confirmation hearings aren't needed, as it's "perfectly appropriate that we test the nominee's intellect and character and judgment and judicial philosophy."

The senator added that he doesn't think the proceedings should be closed, as the American people need to see them.

"I believe this nominee will make it to the Senate floor," Kennedy said. "We'll have an up or down vote before the election, and the American people can decide whether we did the right thing or not. I trust them."
