American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp says he's backing presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump – because "not standing" with him "means "standing with Hillary" Clinton.
On CBS News'
"Face the Nation" Sunday, the former political director for President George W. Bush says the
push by some conservative leaders for an independent candidate would spell disaster in November.
"The last time it happened it was Ross Perot, and it cost us the election," he said.
Schlapp concedes Trump is "not a perfect choice."
"There's a choice," he said. "Not standing with Trump means standing with Hillary. Not a perfect choice, but a choice,"
he tweeted afterward.
