Joe Biden has increased his lead over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election race, according to a new poll released Wednesday.
A Monmouth University poll shows Biden is ahead of Trump by 9 points, but his lead shrinks if Rep. Justin Amash, I-Mich., officially enters the race.
Poll results show:
- 50% of registered voters surveyed say they support Biden.
- 41% of registered voters surveyed say they would vote for Trump.
Biden’s popularity among registered voters increased 2-points since Monmouth released its April poll. Trump lost 3-points since those results were logged.
If Rep. Amash runs, his presence impacts Biden more than Trump. When Amash was added to the candidate list, Biden’s support decreased to 47% while Trump’s slid to just 40%.
Director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute Patrick Murray told The Hill that if the presidential race is as close as it was in 2016, a third-party candidate on the ballot could play a deciding role.
“Overall, there is not as much of an appetite for a third option as there was 4 years ago,” Murray said. “It’s too early to tell whether Amash will have an impact but if this election ends up being as close as 2016, even a small showing can have a crucial impact.”
The survey polled 739 registered voters from April 30-May 4. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
