Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said a report by The New York Times bolsters an obstruction of justice case against President Donald Trump, according to The Washington Post.
"The allegations in the Times piece, if accurate, provide further potential evidence that the White House was engaged in an effort to obstruct justice," Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told the Post.
The Times had reported on Thursday that Trump ordered White House Counsel Donald McGahn to try to stop Attorney General Jeff Sessions from recusing himself from the Justice Department's probe into Russian campaign meddling in the presidential election.
McGahn unsuccessfully carried out Trump's directive — sparking an angry outburst from the president, the newspaper said.
The Times also reported Sessions, at one point, had wanted one negative article a day in the news media about then-FBI Director James Comey. One of Session's aides reportedly approached a congressional staff member asking for any derogatory information about Comey. A spokesperson for the Justice Department said the information was not true.
