Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher on Friday said Attorney General Jeff Sessions "betrayed" the president when he recused himself from the Russia investigation earlier this year.

A guest on CNN, Rohrabacher said Sessions had "no real reason" to recuse himself but by doing it, put into motion the machinations that led to special counsel Robert Mueller.

"The president has a legitimate right to say he was betrayed," Rohrabacher, R-Calif., said on CNN.

"The American people now are getting a taste of what people in Washington have known over this last year, and that is Jeff Sessions betrays the people who have had faith in him," Rohrabacher said. "Faith in him to do his job, and faith in him not to succumb to pressures from the outside, like from CNN and other news bureaus, to try to do their bidding."

Rohrabacher said "I can't call" for Sessions to resign, as two other Republican congressmen have done, but blamed him for the Mueller probe.

"When he recused himself from this whole Russia thing, he knew he was setting in motion the establishment of a special prosecutor . . . and you don't do that unless there is some real tangible reason to do that, and Jeff Sessions had no real reason to recuse himself," Rohrabacher said.

Rohrabacher's assertions come amid a New York Times report that President Donald Trump sent White House counsel Don McGahn to beseech Sessions not to recuse himself; Trump reportedly wanted to be insulated from the Russia probe by Sessions as he believed other AGs had done for previous presidents.

Rohrabacher is also unhappy with Sessions over his decision to rescind an Obama-era policy shielding states from legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
