Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Friday he's often been critical of President Donald Trump's use of Twitter, but when it comes to North Korea, there is a benefit when he shows some unpredictability.
"If you actually have seen stories where it says Kim Jong-un and his regime have tried to reach out unsuccessfully to Republican consultants to say what makes Donald Trump tick, it goes to show they're a little worried about it," the Illinois Republican congressman told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.
Kinzinger added that often, President Donald Trump is not aiming at North Korea or its leader, Kim Jong Un with his tweets, but rather, to China in hopes of getting the situation handled before it goes too far.
When asked if there could be logic behind reports that Kim fears losing his regime if he no longer has nuclear weapons, such as what happened to Ukraine and other countries, Kinzinger said that would be valid if the aggression had not been going on so long.
"This has been going on for 25 years," said Kinzinger. "It was under President [Bill] Clinton when we were a few days shy of a military strike, and Jimmy Carter pops up in the North Korean regime. He's floated going back again, by the way. That would be accurate if this was a 10-year program. It's been 25 years and we've tried for a very long time to get to a diplomatic solution . . . you can't do it by simply saying we have to understand where the North Koreans are coming from."
