Great Britain is drawing up its own battle plans in the event war breaks out between the U.S. and North Korea, the Daily Mail is reporting.
In one scenario, Britain would send its new HMS Queen Elizabeth, a 65,000-ton aircraft carrier with a 700-member crew, to the warzone, the Mail said. The carrier would be escorted by Type-45 destroyers and Type-23 frigates, the newspaper added.
"We have plenty of ships to send . . . the Type-45 destroyers, the Type-23 frigates," one official said. "Britain's new aircraft carrier could be pressed into service early if things turn south."
F-35B fighter jets also would be sent, according to the Mail.
The HMS Queen Elizabeth is not scheduled to enter service until 2020, although the carrier will be commissioned by the end of this year. It is currently undergoing sea trials.
Officials noted Britain had rushed the HMS Illustrious into service in the battle over the Falklands in 1982, the newspaper said.
"In the Falklands we had to react to an event and HMS Illustrious was accelerated to respond," one British Navy official told The Daily Mail. "This was a reaction to protect British territory, however. In this case (North Korea), the UK would be part of a united global coalition. We would see what support we could give."
Great Britain's war plans come as tensions mount between the U.S. and North Korea, the newspaper said.
