Feminist and Ms. magazine founder Gloria Steinem has come under fire from pro-life activists for linking the anti-abortion movement and global warming.
Steinem, the keynote speaker at an event last week celebrating the 75th anniversary of Planned Parenthood in Memphis, Tenn., described "the fundamental right to reproductive freedom" as "the principle that government power stops at our skin," the Commercial Appeal reported.
She also asserted "forced childbirth is the single biggest cause of global warming," LifeNews.com reported – a theory she has previously championed. Steinem discussed her theory that social movements are linked in an interview last March in Maclean's magazine.
"I had this thought that we should have this massive education campaign pointing out that the Pope and all of the other patriarchal religions that dictate to women in this way, accusing them of global warming," Steinem also said in a Cosmopolitan interview last October.
"Because the human load on this earth is the biggest cause of global warming, and that is because of forcing women to have children they would not on their own choose to have . . ."
LifeNews.com opinion writer Emily Derois blasted the argument.
"Steinem is exulted in liberal circles as an inspirational feminist," Derois wrote. "She constantly promotes abortion despite how abortion strips future women of their voices. This is one reason why many feminists identify as pro-life."
