Coming off the second hottest year on record, the once-isolated, ice capped Arctic region is warming up and becoming an attractive area ripe for future commerce, resources, and conflict. War over the arctic is inevitable experts say because the region will be highly sought after in the coming years for its petroleum, rare minerals, fishing, oil, and shipping routes, making it the ideal place for disputes between the U.S., Russia, other surrounding nations, and even China, a non-Arctic country.
“We have to make sure we can protect the area,” said Andrew Holland, COO of American Security Project, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to educating people about the changing nature of national security. “There needs to be a lot more attention paid to the Arctic, but we shouldn’t demagogue it. We shouldn’t assume we will fight a war there, but we have to be ready, especially if our adversaries are there.”
