Rep. Waltz to Newsmax TV: If Trump 'Incited Violence' Try Him in Criminal Court

By    |   Tuesday, 09 February 2021 09:00 PM EST

Rep. Michael Waltz of Florida decried the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump on Newsmax TV on Tuesday, saying if he incited anyone to riot, the case should be tried in a criminal court since that is a crime.

Waltz, 47, reacted to the start of Trump’s second impeachment trial before the U.S. Senate earlier in the day, repeating his remark that he’s seen shoplifters get more due process than Trump and that the trial is “purely political.”

But he also mocked Democrats for pursuing a political trial when if they truly believed he committed – as their impeachment article claims – “incitement to insurrection” that should be easily provable in a court of law.

“If there truly was a crime here, and inciting violence is a crime in our penal code, former President Trump is a private citizen, then they should take their case to court,” Waltz said on “Stinchfield.” “But they know it won’t fly, because every politician, and Trump’s defense team today played a whole slew of them, uses language like ‘fight in Congress,’ ‘go fight for me,’ ‘fight for your values,’ and we know it’s rhetorical.

“And at the end of the day what the president literally said was ‘March on Congress, peacefully and patriotically. This is about politics. It’s the worst of it.”
