President Donald Trump's spending plan is the "start" of the government reigning in spending, particularly in entitlement programs, according to Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany.

McEnany pushed back on criticism of the $4 trillion-plus proposal for next year, in a Tuesday interview on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now."

"We think this budget is the first start" of reigning in spending, she said, pointing to a proposed $237 billion cut to Medicare spring, the heath program for the elder and disabled, McEnany said.

She also hailed the $1.5 billion infrastructure proposal that relies heavily on state and local governments to produce much of the funding.

Democrats "have already charged the taxpayer $787 billion," from an Obama-era 2009 stimulus plan, she said — and it "didn't work."

"Let's try to raise money from the private sector," she said.
