Economist Morici: GOP Can't Let Tea Party Ruin 2014 Chances

By    |   Thursday, 06 March 2014 04:09 PM EST

The Republican Party has a good shot of taking back the Senate — but it won't be with the help of the tea party or right-wingers, according to economist Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland.

"If they're going to take back the Senate, they're going to have run a moderate-right agenda," Morici told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"That doesn't mean they have to compromise their values away, but we can't have any suicidal candidates anymore … The Republican Party has got real problems that are race-based and gender-based."

Morici pointed out that Asian-Americans, who are fairly conservative, have not embraced Republican efforts.

Story continues below video.

In addition, Hispanic-Americans, who are not generally Democrats and have fairly conservative values also have "fundamental problems'' with some of the more extreme elements of the GOP.

"[They] are going to have to be resolved with these groups if they're going to run because, frankly, white guys are not enough," Morici said.

"In 2016, they face a particular problem. I have a feeling there's such a sympathy among women for a female president, that you could put a bonnet on a nanny goat and she would win."
