Grover Norquist to Newsmax TV: Tax Reform 2.0 a Longshot in '18

(Newsmax TV's "Brett Winterble Show")

One of America's top tax cut advocates is pessimistic about Republicans' hopes to make the individual tax cuts permanent, billed as Tax Reform 2.0, this year.

"My guess it won't happen between now and this election, because the modern Democratic Party is just opposed to the whole idea of tax cuts in general," Americans for Tax Reform's (ATR.org) Grover Norquist told Newsmax TV on Monday's "The Brett Winterble Show."

"We need 60 votes – as long as the [Senate] filibuster exists we need 60 votes – to actually go ahead and make the tax cuts permanent. Otherwise, as long as we have a Republican House and Senate, the 50, 51 votes, we can extend it out another 10 years."

Norquist credited last year's tax cuts for taking the country from 1-2 percent growth from former President Barack Obama's administration to 4 percent growth under President Donald Trump.

"Which is pretty impressive," Norquist told Newsmax TV host Brett Winterble. "That's [former President Ronald] Reagan levels of economic growth."

Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority in the Senate and would need to gain nine more seats in this November's midterms to get to 60 votes on making the individual tax cuts permanent in 2019, which Norquist is more optimistic can happen.

"We will get it done," Norquist said, before adding Democrats will chip away at the tax cuts if they win the House and Senate.

". . . The team that is in place now will cut taxes every year they remain in office."
