Many police officers do heroic work that should be rewarded, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., told Newsmax TV.
Scalise was gunned down in 2017 on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia by James Hodgkinson, a rabid liberal activist who had driven from Belleville, Illinois. Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner of the U.S. Capitol Police were also shot while protecting Scalise and other lawmakers on the field. They traded fire with and ultimately killed Hodgkinson.
"There are true heroes out there, and I saw two of them first hand, David Bailey and Crystal Griner and what they did to risk their lives to protect others," Scalise told Monday's "Greg Kelly Reports." "All of us on that ball field that day would've been gunned down, and there was no doubt about it if they weren't there. Both of them got shot during the shoot out and kept going at the shooter until they took him down, risking their lives for others."
He thinks corrupt police obviously need to be singled out and punished when they commit brutality against a citizen.
"That happens every day with law enforcement. Look, if there are bad apples, then go root them out. What we saw with George Floyd is clearly a case where the officer needs to be held accountable," Scalise said.
Scalise added: "All four officers will be held accountable. But to discount the heroic work of officers that also go on to keep our community safe and protect innocent people. I got to see those heroes. I would not be here without those heroes," Scalise said.
