Former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that state governments will have to “place reforms, hunker down” and make cutbacks in order to recover from the economic damage caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
Walker told “National Report” that states are “gonna have to do what families and small businesses are doing all across America. That is, put in place reforms, hunker down, [and] cut back on things that they don't need to do.”
He added later that law enforcement, firefighters and other public safety workers should “absolutely” be a priority.
“Those are the same sorts of priorities people are making, and if anyone deserves help from the federal government it’s our workers, and small businesses that need to keep alive. You look at some 30 million Americans over the last six weeks have filed for initial unemployment compensation claims, compare that to most state and local governments, where state government employees are sitting idle."
He said, “most governments are still very much locked in, and … you don't force them to do reforms and you're gonna have the same sorts of troubles that Illinois had for the past couple of decades. They keep getting bailed out, bailed out, and bailed out. Now is the time to push significant reform in both our federal and our state governments.”
