The New York Yankees have hit one out of the park when it comes to helping the family of one of two police officers shot dead in Brooklyn over the weekend.
The Silver Shield Foundation, launched by late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in 1982, will pay for the education of the two children of Rafael Ramos, who was slain along with his partner Wenjian Liu.
"In this case the $40,000 has already been set aside for the children," foundation Chairman William Walters said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on
Newsmax TV.
Steinbrenner was inspired to start the foundation after seeing a news report of four children with their mother folding an American flag at the funeral of their father, an NYPD officer killed in the line of duty.

The group covers the children of police and firefighters in New York City and New York state, and police in Connecticut and New Jersey. It also has helped 700 children whose parents died in the 9/11 attacks.
Ramos, 40, left behind two sons, a 13-year-old and another in college. His partner, Liu, 32, had recently gotten married and had no children.
"We guarantee children have a college education by setting aside $20,000 for each," Walters said.
"We also ensure it's used properly because no money goes to anyone but the university that the child is going to.
"We also . . . help the widow if she cares to go to a beautician school or in some way supplement her income because of the tragedy. If there's emotional problems in the home, we send people in the home to try and help them."
