The late Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas casino mogul and prominent donor to Republican causes, was "truly a great man" who will be remembered for a long time, outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.
"He was a committed philanthropist and a very capable businessman, someone who cared very deeply about the United States of America and Israel," Pompeo told "National Report," noting Adelson appreciated efforts to secure democracy in both places.
"A man like that will be missed for sure," Pompeo added. "The things that he's done, the actions he took while he was here on Earth, will be remembered for a long time. We use this often, and it's most deserved here: He was truly a great man."
Adelson, who died at 87 on Jan. 11 from complications related to treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, was at one time the third-richest man in the world.
Politico in 2012 referred to him as "the dominant pioneer of the super PAC era."
He often hosted top GOP strategists and candidates at his office, located on Las Vegas' strip, and worked to ensure support of Israel become a central part of the party's platform.
This was strongly demonstrated when the Trump administration worked in 2018 to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
